Dr. Howard is a Rheumatologist. Rheumatology is a sub specialty of Internal Medicine, and a Rheumatologist is an expert in diagnosing and treating all forms of arthritis along with auto immune disorders such as systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjogren's syndrome polymyositis, polymyalgia rheumatica, scleroderma, and related disorders. Rheumatologists also treat systemic vasculitis such as Wegener's granulomatosis and giant cell arteritis.
Finally, Rheumatologists are adept at diagnosing and treating "soft-tissue" rheumatic disorders such as bursitis, tendinitis, and fibromyalgia. Rheumatologists do not perform surgery.
Dr. Howard generally works as a consultant along with your primary physician. After your initial office visit, Dr. Howard will contact your referring doctor by letter with his opinion & treatment plan. If your arthritis problem requires ongoing rheumatology management, Dr. Howard will provide this, working with your primary care doctor and any other specialists that you may have. If you think that you have a rheumatic problem that potentially could be helped by Dr. Howard's expertise, simply ask your primary care physician if a referral to Dr. Howard might be of benefit to you. If the problem is of an urgent nature, a phone call from your doctor to Dr. Howard will usually result in an office visit within a few days of the call.
