A brother said to an old man, 'I see no warfare in my heart.' The old man said to him, 'You are a building open on all sides, and whoever wishes can pass through you and you are unaware of it. If you have a door, you should shut it, and not allow evil thoughts to enter through it; for then you will see them standing outside, banging on the door, and attacking you.'

The community of St. George began celebrating the Divine Liturgy in 1892, incorporated under St. Raphael of Brooklyn in 1905, and its first altar was consecrated by him in 1911. In 2006, the parish was elevated to the status of cathedral, the primary see of the Diocese of Charleston, Oakland and the Mid-Atlantic.

Antiochian Archdiocese | Diocese of Charleston, Oakland and the Mid-Atlantic

Since 1892, the Orthodox Christian faith has been lived in Charleston, West Virginia, brought originally by immigrants from Lebanon and Syria. In 1905, the parish was officially incorporated under the episcopal leadership of St. Raphael of Brooklyn, who in 1911 consecrated the first altar.

Located in downtown Charleston across from the Town Center Mall, St. George Cathedral serves about 400 families and seeks to bring the light of Holy Orthodoxy to the whole Kanawha Valley and all of West Virginia.

St. George Cathedral is a parish of the Self-Ruled Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America and serves as the primary episcopal see of the Diocese of Charleston, Oakland and the Mid-Atlantic. The diocesan chancery is located here in Charleston.

Divine services are held daily. All are welcome to attend, regardless of current religious affiliation or background.

Please join us Saturday, October 16th and Sunday, October 17th for our Icon Festival, a festival of early Christian art.
